Compared to a sit-down unit, the stand-up forklift unit is totally different to operate. The method at which you lift cargo and your movements are really different. If you do not have correct training for using a stand-up model, you could potentially cause harm to yourself or to co-employees. When utilizing a stand-up model, you have to follow the proper safety rules. There are a few basic operating standards that have to be met when using a stand-up model.
When starting, stand up on the lift truck so as to get a feel for the controls and the steering knob. The steering is handled with the knob steering plate instead of a steering wheel. Take note that this particular knob moves exceptionally fast, therefore, you have to be accustomed to moving it gently so as to be sure not to over steer. The horn is located on the control handle, as is the control for backwards, forwards and the movement of the forks. The floor pedal allows the forklift power to move.
Turn the key to start the equipment's engine if you are ready to start. The forks should not be extended at this stage. When you are moving all-over the floor, the forks must be pointed a little upwards. Do not drive with the forks in their extended position. If you are moving forward, move the control handle forward and step on the pedal to make the lift move forward. If you are backing up, be certain to beep your horn to alert people around you. Look behind you prior to stepping on the pedal in order to make sure the way is safe and clear. Next, while stepping on the pedal, pull the control handle towards you. Stay focused and alert and make sure that you are always operating in a safe way.
When approaching a corner with the lift truck, turn the steering knob in the direction you are heading. Make sure to keep your hands on the control handle and keep your foot on the accelerator. When turning right, the steering knob will move in a clockwise direction while moving forward. If you are turning left, your steering knob will go in a counter-clockwise direction.
The stand-up units take some getting used to, particularly if you have just operated sit down units. If you take some time to know the machine and with some training, you will be able to efficiently and quickly handle loads in little time.
