Bud Bushnell founded Genie Industries in the year 1966, after he purchased the manufacturing rights to a material lift that functioned on compressed air. The name Genie came from the "magic in the bottle" which was utilized to raise and lower the hoist. This mechanism really impressed a lot of customers and hence, the name was born.



Genie expanded operations and established itself into different new markets, since the need for work lifts and platforms grew. Genie Industries was sold during 2002 and became a part of Terex Corporation.



In the first years after the sale, it was decided to maintain the Genie brand name within the Terex Aerial Work Platforms or AWP segment of Terex, because of the name's solid reputation in the marketplace. Hence, all Genie machines continue to be marketed under the Genie brand.
