Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to operate electric lift trucks is supplied by huge industrial batteries that need to be charged frequently and maintained correctly. Safety measures should be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is important to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station must be located close to the charging place. The route to the station must not be blocked and an employee who is injured should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While in the vicinity of a battery and charging area, open flames are not allowed. Do not allow things like for instance lighters or matches to be utilized when someone is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging place correctly ventilated. The recharging process can cause fumes to be released. These gases are both explosive and toxic.
